The iPhone is responsible for smartphone growth, but Android is still the most popular, says a Nielsen survey.

The results of the survey show that 38 percent of cellphone users in the US own a smartphone. They also note that 55 percent of the users who purchased a new phone in the past three months chose a smartphone instead of a feature phone. According to Nielsen, this is up from 34 percent a year ago.

38 percent of smartphone owners use Android devices, making it the most popular OS. However, the survey results also point out that the iPhone has seen the biggest growth these past few months. RIM's BlackBerry is still in the picture, but losing ground fast, while the rest (Palm OS, webOS, Symbian, Windows Phone 7) are far from being as large as the others.
