The 2023 New Zealand general election was held on 14 October 2023 to determine the composition of the 54th Parliament of New Zealand. The incumbent centre-left Labour majority government, led by Chris Hipkins, sought to win a third consecutive term in government. However, they were defeated by the centre-right National Party, led by Christopher Luxon.

The election was held in a time of economic uncertainty, with the country facing high inflation and rising interest rates. The National Party campaigned on a platform of economic growth and tax cuts, while the Labour Party campaigned on a platform of social justice and environmental protection.

The National Party won the popular vote by a margin of 2.5%, and won 65 seats in Parliament, compared to Labour's 55 seats. The Green Party won 10 seats, and the ACT New Zealand Party won 9 seats.

The election result was a surprise to many, as Labour had been the frontrunner in the polls for most of the campaign. However, the National Party's focus on economic issues resonated with voters, and Luxon was seen as a more competent leader than Hipkins.

The National Party formed a minority government with the support of ACT New Zealand. Luxon became the 42nd Prime Minister of New Zealand.

The 2023 New Zealand general election was a significant event in the country's political history. It marked the end of Labour's six-year period in government, and the beginning of a new era under the National Party.

The official results of the 2023 New Zealand General Election have not yet been released, as the counting process is still ongoing. However, preliminary results show that the Labour Party has won the most seats in Parliament, followed by the National Party.

As of October 16, 2023, the preliminary results are as follows:

Party Seats
Labour 60
National 48
Green 12
ACT 10
Te Pāti Māori   4

This would give Labour a majority in Parliament, and would allow them to form a government without the need for a coalition partner. However, it is important to note that these are only preliminary results, and the final outcome of the election may be different.

The official results of the 2023 New Zealand General Election are expected to be released on Friday, November 3, 2023.
