2011: Recycled Cycles: How to Turn Two Lighters into a Motorbike - www.drmobiles.co.nz

If you use disposable lighters, what do you do with them when they’re empty? Throwing them away seems wasteful and not at all in the DIY spirit of tinkerers who don’t like to see anything go to waste. Theserather confusing instructions (written in Chinese with only the most basic of pictures to illustrate the steps) help you take two regular empty lighters and turn them into an awesome little motorcycle.

There is nothing not to love about these motorbikes, from their wheels made out of the lighters’ striking wheels to the tiny handlebars and tailpipes.

Luckily, one enterprising DIYer decided to brave the nearly-incomprehensible instructions to build a Lightercycle and make a video for the benefit of all other enthusiastic builders who can’t wait to try the project. Armed with a couple of plastic lighters and a few basic tools, you too can liberate the Lightercycle inside your spare fire-makers.

The REAL Deal: Stunning New BodyGuard Weapon (www.drmobiles.co.nz), Auckland, New Zealand

Law enforcement and military officials are always on the lookout for devices which can help keep their people safe. And more often than not it seems like they look to sci-fi to keep them supplied with new and awesome ideas. The inventor of this gadget has one foot firmly in the entertainment industry and is starting to introduce his brainchild to the cops and soldiers of the world. David Brown, an editor, producer and cameraman who works on music videos, invented this wearable weapon called the BodyGuard.

The device is a heavy armored glove equipped with a powerful taser, laser pointer, flashlight and camera – all equipped to deter and stop criminals. A single punch with this glove – or even just the threat of the punch – can defuse a situation much faster and with less force than drawing and equipping a more traditional weapon. The idea came to Brown as he and some friends were discussing how ineffective most weapons are since you can drop them or they can be wrestled away from you in a moment of conflict. The BodyGuard is, very appropriately, endorsed by Kevin Costner (who starred in a movie of the same name). And if Dances With Wolves digs it, well, it must be good.

Gadget New Update, 2011: Shopping Trippy: Folding Bike Transforms Into Trolley

If you’ve ever ridden your bike to the grocery store only to find out with dismay that the store doesn’t provide bike racks, the Amxma Bike could be just what you’ve been wishing for. The sassy little bike folds up into a shopping cart that you can wheel right into the store with you and down each aisle as you make your selections.

When you’re finished with your shopping, you can wheel the bike right back outside, pop it back into riding position and pedal back home. If you’re brave or just don’t have far to go, you can even forgo the plastic bags altogether. Then you’ll save both the gas it would have taken to drive there and the petroleum it would take to make those bags.

The concept of shopping with such a tiny basket may seem a little strange to people in some parts of the world. However, in many countries it’s normal to do the grocery shopping every day or two, making the small basket just the right size. Maybe this sweet, environmentally-friendly invention could even help inspire us to lead healthier lives by encouraging us to eat fresher foods (thanks to the limited cargo capacity) and get regular exercise.

Even if you aren’t into the idea of taking your bike grocery shopping, the Amxma bike is still a nice innovation for cyclists. Most folding bikes are awkward and have to be carried after folding up, but the Amxma easily wheels to wherever you need to take it thanks to an independent third wheel and patented neutral gear motion.

Vive le Button! Turn Your iPhone Into a Real Digi Camera (www.drmobiles.co.nz)

In recent years, many people have lamented the death of the button. That endlessly inviting pushable object that is almost impossible to leave alone (even when it sports a large “DO NOT PUSH” warning) has gone the way of the dinosaurs as most of our gadgets are going touchscreen. So it is with the camera. Even digital cameras sported a big button on top that gave way satisfyingly under a bit of pressure from a finger. But now that so many of us are substituting our mobile phones for actual cameras, there’s no button to push – just an annoyingly easy-to-miss little box on a touchscreen.

Beep Industries wants to bring back the button with their iPhone accessory they call the Red Pop. It easily snaps onto the iPhone, turning it into something that resembles a digital camera complete with a giant red button on top. By giving the iPhone that familiar camera-like orientation and a real button for you to push, the Red Pop could help you capture moments you would otherwise miss while fumbling for that on-screen shutter button. This isn’t one of those products that you would love to have but will never be able to buy: the first production run is being financed through Kickstarter
