Tech News Leak: Sony to manufacture iPhone 5 camera, 8MP all but certain (Albany Phone Repair)

There has been a lot of speculation about the iPhone 5 but the camera department has rarely been mentioned. Well now we know its manufacturer and resolution.

Previously there was just those vague rumors that Apple is considering changing their current OmniVision-produced camera with a Sony one.

Well now we have a confirmation that the Cupertino-based company has gone ahead with the move from no other, but the Sony CEO. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal Sir Howard Stringer let slip that his company is supplying camera modules to Apple. And since none of the existing Apple products use Sony modules it's only logical to assume that those units are set for the iPhone 5 production.

Which leads us to the conclusion that the Apple iPhone 5 will pack one of those sweet 8 megapixel Exmor R backlit sensors. The other Sony module that's meant for cameraphone usage is 16.4MP unit, but it seems unlikely that Apple will use it as it it significantly larger and that would make the iPhone 5 way thicker than its predecessor.

Sony creates those image sensor technology in the Sendai factory in Japan, which is one of the affected factories by the earthquakes and tsunamis, which hit Japan this year. It's yet unclear if that will affect the iPhone 5 availability, though.

So, larger screen, an 8 megapixel camera and, possibly, NFC for the next iPhone then. It's starting to look as a pretty decent upgrade, right?

HTC ThunderBolt gives iPhone 4 a run for its money (North Shore Phone Repair, www.drmobiles.co.nz)

To some it might be a surprise. Others might just call it logic. The fact, however, remains that the Thunderbolt – HTC’s latest powerhouse of a phone has been outselling the iPhone 4 in a significant number of Verizon Wireless latest locations according to data, compiled by a team of analysts at BTIG.

Out of a 150 Verizon Wireless stores, 61% have reported evenly distributed sales between the two devices, 28% claim to have sold more Thunderbolts, and the rest have claimed the iPhone as the winner. Verizon Wireless executives must be nothing short of thrilled by the solid reception of HTC’s latest large screen offering.

Samsung Galaxy Mini S5570 Review by Dr Mobiles Limited (Auckland Mobile Phone Repair and Unlock)

Minis are supposed to be the cheaper, stripped down version of the bigger and superior gadgets. There’s a long list of bigger and superior siblings for the Samsung Galaxy Mini S5570 to choose from but it has its own two feet to stand on.

Samsung Galaxy Mini S5570 official photos

So, the Galaxy Mini is the last shake of the bag. It will never get to rub shoulders with the big and scary smartphones. But it’s not all bad you know. Not bad at all actually for what basically is an entry level smartphone with complete connectivity, social networking, internet, Android apps and music. It’s the right kind of device for smartphone newbies. A good option if you just don’t want to spend a truck-load of money on a smartphone.

Key Features

  • Quad-Band GSM and dual-band 3G support
  • 7.2 Mbps HSDPA
  • 3.14” 256K-color QVGA TFT touchscreen
  • ARMv6 600MHz processor, 384MB RAM
  • Android OS v2.2 (Froyo) with TouchWiz v3.0 UI
  • 160MB internal storage, hot-swappable MicroSD slot, 2GB card included
  • 3.15 MP fixed-focus camera with geotagging
  • GPS receiver with A-GPS
  • Stereo FM radio with RDS
  • 3.5mm audio jack
  • Document editor
  • Accelerometer and proximity sensor
  • Swype text input
  • MicroUSB port (charging) and stereo Bluetooth 2.1
  • Social network integration
  • Good build, youthful styling

Main disadvantages

  • Low screen resolution limits choice of apps
  • Fixed focus camera
  • No secondary video-call camera
  • No flash, no dedicated camera key
  • Poor video recording QVGA @ 15fps

The Galaxy Mini was not made to impress. It was made to serve and be simple to use. It’s a solid little smartphone that has all the important ingredients. It can do most of the things your Galaxy S can, just without the stuff that pushes the price up.

With this one, Samsung look to encourage their loyal users to consider a smartphone. Versatility and friendliness make Android quite inviting. The Mini has the specs to back that up too.

Budget-conscious users are having a range of competing phones to choose from and the Samsung Galaxy Mini will have to work harder to get noticed. But the right price tag will put it on the radar of the young, novice smartphone users. That gives the Mini something to start with.

2011 Latest Nokia Phone Review: Nokia E7. (Takapuna Mobile Phone Repair, www.drmobiles.co.nz)

Business as usual for the Eseries is a cliché – thank you very much. But the kind that makes the world feel right. The Nokia E7 could’ve been just another Eseries phone. Oh well, that wasn’t meant to be. The latest is implicitly the greatest but, in the case of the E7, the latest may simply be the last.

Nokia E7 official photos

Symbian is just about to be knocked off the top-spot as the market-leading smartphone platform. Worse yet, while loyal users are still sitting on a fence about replacing their E71/E72s Nokia is deciding whether to euthanize Symbian. Question marks have been hanging over the platform’s approach to touchscreen since day one. And now it’s got WP7 at its very doorstep. It’s the worst of times for the Nokia E7. But it’s up to it to show that the Eseries are still open for business.

Key features

  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support
  • Penta-band 3G with 10.2 Mbps HSDPA and 2 Mbps HSUPA
  • Anodized aluminum unibody
  • 4" 16M-color ClearBlack AMOLED capacitive touchscreen of 640 x 360 pixel resolution
  • Scratch resistant Gorilla glass display
  • 8 megapixel fixed-focus camera with LED flash
  • 720p video recording @ 25fps
  • Symbian^3 OS
  • 680 MHz ARM 11 CPU and 256 MB RAM
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
  • microHDMI port 720p TV-out functionality
  • GPS receiver with A-GPS support and free lifetime voice-guided navigation
  • Digital compass
  • 16GB of on-board storage
  • Active noise cancellation with a dedicated mic
  • DivX and XviD video support
  • Built-in accelerometer and proximity sensor
  • Standard 3.5 mm audio jack
  • Stereo FM Radio with RDS, FM transmitter
  • microUSB port with USB On-the-go
  • Flash and Java support for the web browser
  • Stereo Bluetooth 3.0
  • Good quality audio
  • Smart and voice dialing
  • Office document editor preinstalled

Main disadvantages

  • Symbian^3 is still behind Android and iOS usability standards
  • Ovi store content is inferior to Android market and App Store
  • Fixed-focus on an 8 megapixel camera is just wrong
  • Camera interface is decidedly outdated
  • Battery is not user-replaceable
  • No microSD card slot

Now, Nokia reconfirmed their commitment to Symbian in the short-term, but that doesn’t mean much. If the platform is to be scrapped, users will learn it the hard way when regular updates stop coming in. Occasional bug-fixes is the best they can hope to get. And good software support is among of the main reasons why people still choose Nokia.

However, how much short-term can stretch depends on the success of the current Symbian^3 devices. So if the Nokia E7 does at least as well on the market as the N8, it might as well buy the platform a few extra years.

As you can see from the lists above, the Nokia E7 is basically a larger N8, trading the camera bulk for a a larger and better display and a full QWERTY keyboard. To be honest though, when we reviewed the N8 it was mostly the camera we were delighted with. Then, that was five months ago and the bar is set higher now.

2011 Phone Review: Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc (Devonport iPhone Repair Centre, 095515344)

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc is back for a second round (not counting the Lorem Ipsum bit) and this time it will stay a while longer. The company’s new flagship did great in our preview and we’d gladly have more of it.

The statement just couldn’t have been stronger and clearer. The new BRAVIA screen and the impressively slim and fit body are exactly the way to treat a flagship. Android Gingerbread too is as good as it gets in the smartphone world these days.

Just months ago that combination would’ve equaled a license to kill – which the Arc would’ve used without second thoughts. But the competition is insanely intense today and no one is given a second to think.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc official photos

It takes more than a few outstanding features these days, and they’d better be backed by solid performance across the board. Omissions are not easily forgiven so the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc better stay focused.

Key features

  • Quad-band GSM /GPRS/EDGE support
  • 3G with 7.2 Mbps HSDPA and 5.76 Mbps HSUPA
  • 4.2" 16M-color capacitive LED-backlit LCD touchscreen of FWVGA resolution (480 x 854 pixels) with Sony Mobile BRAVIA engine
  • Android OS v2.3 Gingerbread
  • 1 GHz Scorpion CPU, Adreno 205 GPU, Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255 chipset
  • 512 MB RAM
  • 8 MP autofocus camera with LED flash and geotagging
  • 720p video recording @ 30fps with continuous autofocus
  • Wi-Fi b/g/n and DLNA
  • GPS with A-GPS
  • microSD slot up to 32GB (8GB card included)
  • Accelerometer and proximity sensor
  • Standard 3.5 mm audio jack
  • Stereo FM radio with RDS
  • microUSB port (charging) and stereo Bluetooth v2.1
  • Voice dialing
  • Adobe Flash 10.2 support
  • microHDMI port
  • Ultra slim (8.7mm at its thinnest point)

Main disadvantages

  • Display has poor viewing angles
  • No front-facing camera
  • Main competitors have dual-core CPUs and better GPUs
  • No smart dialing
  • Display doesn’t have auto brightness control
  • microSD card slot is not hot-swappable
  • Camera key isn’t particularly comfortable

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc is a sweeping update of the X10. A new generation chipset, more screen estate and a microHDMI port in a well done facelift make the Arc an easy pick even over a Gingerbread-powered XPERIA X10.

However, in-house competition is by far not the XPERIA Arc’s biggest problem. Competitors have moved so much forward over the past year or so that the question really is whether Sony Ericsson have managed to keep the pace.

More Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc beauty

LG and Samsung have already gone dual-core and got Full HD video recording, while Sony Ericsson – and HTC – are so far choosing to focus their efforts elsewhere. This review should help us answer – among other things – the question of who made the right call and who will have to play catch up.
