The landline phone is becoming something of an endangered species these days; most of us simply prefer to carry our multi-functional mobile phones with us. But there’s nothing wrong with a little indulgent nostalgia, which is just what this fun iPhone dock looks like. It turns your iPhone into a corded desk phone, complete with speakers and a USB plug. Your phone will charge and sync while it’s plugged in, and you get to pick up the handset when it rings and remember the good old (though not-too-distant) days.

The product isn’t without its fair share of irony. After all, you pay good money to have the freedom of living without cords, right? But the visceral satisfaction of slamming the phone’s receiver down at the end of a heated conversation will no doubt be worth the slight sense of ridiculousness you’ll probably feel while using it. The dock also features a mute button and, of course, can be used to listen to music while your phone is charging.

There aren’t many details available yet – no release date or price have been announced – but the Desk Phone Dock will be introduced at the 2010 China Sourcing Fair. But more importantly than all of the absent information is the fact that you can’t help but love a product with a conceptual commercial this adorable.

Retro Rotary: New Old Technology Imitating Extinct Technology (Mobile Phone Repair by Dr Mobiles Limited, Auckland)

With a healthy dose of nostalgia and an old-school styling that would make any child of the 80s or earlier grin with recognition, theiRetroPhone application for the iPhone lets you dial like your grandma. It’s a simple app that puts a rotary-style dialing apparatus on your iPhone screen so you can experience 20th century communication at its best.

Remember when dialing a phone meant moving that rotary dialer around and waiting until the circle swung back to the starting position? The distinctive sound and need for patience are recreated in this app. It’s a cheesy recreation of a decidedly clumsy technology, but for some reason we tend to love retro apps that remind us of simpler times when technology was analog and kind of ugly.

1.5 GHz HTC Eternity leaks, boasts a huge 4.7-inch Super LCD screen

An image of the first HTC handset to ship with the latest Windows Phone 7 version - Mango just surfaced. The HTC Eternity is certainly entering rumorland with a bang - it features a monstrous 4.7-inch Super LCD screen.

It's certainly a looker and we will definitely cheer if HTC goes for some metal on the device as they usually do. The HTC Eternity relies a 1.5Ghz single-core processor on a Qualcomm MSM8255 chipset to do the math and offers generous 16GB of internal memory. The amount of RAM is yet to be confirmed, but we figure it's going to be north of 512MB.

On the back of the Eternity sits an 8MP shooter with dual LED flash, capable of recording 720p video. There's also a 1.3MP camera on the front for those video-chats. Other notable features include Wi-Fi, GPS, DLNA, Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR and to keep the giant screen from dimming off quickly - a 1650mAh battery.

Release date and price are, understandably, unknown for now, but expect to see the HTC Eternity hit the shelves this fall or as soon as WP7 Mango starts rolling.

Science News Update 2011: Shockingly Accurate Smartphone App Finds Cancer in 1 Hour (Apple iPhone Repair, Auckland by Dr Mobile Limited)

It seems that smartphones really can do anything these days, including saving lives by spotting cancer. A new smartphone app11 has been developed by scientists at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston which can tell the difference between benign and cancerous tumors with up to 100% accuracy and in only one hour. The traditional methods of testing for cancer can take weeks for a result and only boast about an 84 percent accuracy rate.

The testing system involves a smartphone and a miniature MRI machine. A tiny sample – about a thousandth of a millimeter – is removed from the suspect growth using a very thin needle. Then, antibodies are added to the sample which bind to the proteins in tumors, and magnetic particles are added which bind to the antibodies. After being placed in the MRI machine, the solution vibrates thanks to the machine’s magnet. The more extreme the vibration, the more likely the growth is cancerous. The smartphone app reads the results, leaving virtually no room for interpretation error on the part of the operator. According to the researchers, this revolutionary system could be in widespread use in hospitals in as little as three years.

Tech News Update, 2011: Apple iPhone sales in the US up while others stagnate (Apple iPhone Repair by drmobiles.co.nz)

According to the latest survey by Nielsen, 38% of mobile phone users in the US now own a smartphone. Also, out of all the people who purchased phones in the last three months, 55% purchased a smartphone, up from 34% last year.

The current leader in terms of sales is Android with 38% market share of all the smartphones in the US. In second place with 27% users is Apple with their lone iPhone and in third place is RIM with 21% users.

An interesting observation made by Nielsen suggests that contrary to popular belief it is the iPhone that is driving smartphone sales in the US with the maximum amount of growth in the last three months. Android sales, on the other hand, have flattened over the same period of time, despite new phones being launched every week.

The reason for the growth in iPhone sales could be attributed to the launch of the Verizon version, along with the white model. Now with Apple selling unlocked versions of the iPhone 4 in the US the numbers are likely to go even higher. However, the real growth will be observed later in the year during the last quarter, when the next generation iPhone goes on sale. Google too would be launching Ice Cream Sandwich, hopefully along with a new Nexus phone. Meanwhile the likes of RIM are likely to continue getting the lukewarm response unless they come up with something groundbreaking.

The 2011 Super Cool Apple iPhone App Turns Barcodes Into Beats!! (Apple iPhone Repair, www.drmobiles.co.nz)

The iPhone has created a whole new era of amateur music. Apps that let you play all kinds of weird music have been fan favorites since the early days of Apple’s iconic communication/entertainment device.Barcodas is a new contender that will make your whole life – particularly the parts that you spend shopping – more musical.

Using the iPhone’s camera, Barcodas turns product bar codes into strange tinny little melodies. You can adjust the time signature and harmonic scale for the songs, turning any EAN or UPC bar code into a somewhat-customizable piece of music.

After creating an ear-pleasing melody off of your Wheaties box, you can share your musical creations on Facebook. For true music lovers, there is a whole world of compositional possibilities out there in every aisle of the grocery store just waiting to be brought to life. For the negligible price of 99 cents from the App Store, Barcodas seems like it offers up plenty of entertainment value for the cost.

2011: Recycled Cycles: How to Turn Two Lighters into a Motorbike - www.drmobiles.co.nz

If you use disposable lighters, what do you do with them when they’re empty? Throwing them away seems wasteful and not at all in the DIY spirit of tinkerers who don’t like to see anything go to waste. Theserather confusing instructions (written in Chinese with only the most basic of pictures to illustrate the steps) help you take two regular empty lighters and turn them into an awesome little motorcycle.

There is nothing not to love about these motorbikes, from their wheels made out of the lighters’ striking wheels to the tiny handlebars and tailpipes.

Luckily, one enterprising DIYer decided to brave the nearly-incomprehensible instructions to build a Lightercycle and make a video for the benefit of all other enthusiastic builders who can’t wait to try the project. Armed with a couple of plastic lighters and a few basic tools, you too can liberate the Lightercycle inside your spare fire-makers.
