In the chaotic and unregulated mobile phone industry of New Zealand, consumers are not very well protected or have their expensive iPhone 4 or smartphone killed by the non-professional.  Any one with an email or a prepay phone number can start a "pro-repair" or "iMiracle" type of internet presence to lure unsuspecting victims on phone repair and unlock.

23 March, 2011--Sprint posted the teasers for two new 4G-enabled devices and today But the good news is that one of them, the HTC EVO 4G has a global GSM version too. The other gadget is the HTC EVO View 4G Android tablet, a Flyer variant. The Sprint branded gadgets are 4G-enabled (WiMAX). The EVO 3D seems to be a 3D-enabled Pyramid, which is quite interesting.

The HTC EVO 3D features a 4.3" qHD screen that shows glasses-free 3D imagery and two 5MP cameras to capture stereoscopic stills and video. 3D videos are shot in 720p resolution but 3D stills are limited to 2MP for some reason.

The EVO 3D packs the first ever (official) Snapdragon dual-core CPU and also the first ever 1.2GHz Snapdragon. It packs 1GB of RAM, running Android 2.3 Gingerbread with HTC Sense.

The phone measures 126mm x 65mm x 12.05mm and packs a mammoth 1730mAh battery - it weighs a hefty 170 grams though. The HTC EVO 3D packs MHL (the port that combines USB and HDMI), Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0, microSD card slot and other goodies.

Sprint's HTC EVO 3D will be launching this summer (no pricing info yet) with CDMA and WiMAX "4G", but there's global a GSM/UMTS/HSPA version up on HTC's site too (there's no launch info on it unfortunately). The HTC Pyramid is basically a non-3D version of the EVO 3D (though they look slightly different) so we'll see how that pans out.

Sprint and Blockbuster have partnered and Blockbuster on Demand will be preinstalled on the HTC EVO 4G and will offer 3D movies, available on the same day as the Blu-ray release.

Sprint will also be launching the HTC EVO View 4G, which is a Flyer that speaks CDMA and WiMAX. The aluminum body of the View 4G is black unlike the silvery chassis of the Flyer.

That aside, the two tablets share the same specs - 1.5GHz single-core processor, Android Gingerbread, 7" 1024x600-pixel screen, two cameras (5MP main, 1.3MP secondary), Scribe technology, Bluetooth 3.0 and Wi-Fi b/g/n.

The HTC EVO View 4G is coming to Sprint in the summer too, with CDMA and WiMAX connectivity (and hot-spot functionality) but there's nothing on the price yet. The GSM version, the Flyer should start hitting stores in April, 2011.  in April.

Feature phones have been busy adding more features to their arsenal in a bid to survive the onslaught of cheap smartphones. The Samsung S3850 Corby II is one such phone. Corby put a bargain price on touchscreen – the Corby II moves up a notch but stays within budget.

Touchscreen, Wi-Fi, multitasking, app store – those things used to be associated with smartphones, but the Corby II has them all on its list of features.

The latest TouchWiz, fresh from recent stints with both Bada and Android, blurs the line with smartphones. In fact, the major difference between the Corby II and a low-end Bada phone is that you install Java apps on it, instead of Bada apps.

The J2ME platform has been around longer and many useful apps have been developed for it, while Bada OS is relatively new.

Anyway, the Samsung S3850 Corby II can’t run away from its name. The bigger screen and better specs aside, the Corby II is for beginners. So, no high-end features, thank you very much.

Samsung S3850 at a glance:

  • General: GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, GPRS/EDGE class 12
  • Form factor: Touchscreen bar phone
  • Dimensions: 109.9 x 66.6 x 11.7 mm, 102g
  • Display: 3.2" capacitive TFT touchscreen, QVGA resolution (240 x 320 pixels)
  • Platform: Latest TouchWiz UI with multitasking
  • Memory: 26MB user available storage, hot-swappable microSD card slot (up to 16GB)
  • Camera: 2 megapixel fixed focus camera with smile detection, QVGA@15fps video recording
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi b/g/n; Bluetooth 3.0 (A2DP); standard microUSB port; 3.5mm audio jack
  • Misc: FM radio with RDS; accelerometer sensor; Facebook and Twitter integration; DNSe sound enhancement; Find Music recognition service

Some might not be happy with the cutbacks – but the lack of 3G connectivity is offset by the Wi-Fi support, while the low camera resolution is not a showstopper. The social networking support is a key feature – some people just can’t do without Facebook and Twitter.

Samsung must be getting better at building cheap phones – the Corby II feels extraordinarily solid despite its all-plastic body. With DNSe and a good-sized microSD card you can skip the dedicated music player, the Corby II will handle your musical needs.

The color combo and the software package make the Samsung S3850 Corby II a youth oriented phone – suited to their means and interests.

Little cash in your pocket and a good phone on your mind. Is the Nokia C2-01 it? A still camera, 3G and a memory card slot sound like we’re on the right track. In contrast to the C2-00, this one omits the dual SIM handling but there are other goodies to make up for that.

Nokia Nokia Nokia Nokia
Nokia C2-01 official photos

It’s a cheap phone alright, nothing too flashy, nothing to shout about. But the Nokia C2-01 deserves some credit for squeezing a number of nice little features into its budget. 3.2MP still imaging does sound refreshing after reviewing a VGA primary camera recently. Data speeds top EDGE and a microSD card slot means there’s more than enough room for your music collection. A 3.5mm audio jack too perhaps is better than expected for the price you pay.

Key features

  • Entry level phone with decent features
  • Quad-band GSM/EDGE connectivity
  • Tri-band 3G connectivity
  • 2.0" 256K-color QVGA TFT display
  • 3.2MP fixed-focus camera
  • QVGA@15fps video recording
  • Series 40 UI, 6th edition
  • Stereo FM radio with RDS
  • Bluetooth 2.1 (with EDR)
  • Standard microUSB port (charging)
  • microSD card slot (16GB supported)
  • 3.5mm audio jack
  • Dedicated Facebook app

Main disadvantages

  • Poor video recording
  • No smart dialing
  • Miserable display (almost no such thing as a viewing angle for this one)
  • Relatively poor audio reproduction quality

We have some complaints (seriously, it’s 2011 and S40 still lacks smart dialing) but other than that the C2-01 looks pretty decent. Arguably, you can hold the lack of dual SIM support against the Nokia C2-01. This feature though is obviously left to the most basic of handsets in the C-series. The C2-01 is a budget phone but not that much of a penny pincher.

Nokia C2-01 live shots

You know, phones with a flashlight have long been bottom of the Nokia barrel. Recently, it’s dual SIM phones. Well, the C2-01 is neither. Now, how good is this – or how bad? Jump to the next page, as we try to find out.

But there’re other questions to be answered first. What’s in the box? Is the Nokia C2-01 durable?

iPhone 3G Unlock near the Sentinel Tower Apartment Complex, Takapuna, Auckland, (09) 551-5344

Sentinel (The), Takapuna in Auckland

Dr Mobiles Limited, 1 Huron Street, Takapuna North Shore is located less than 50 meters away from this superb structure.  In fact, I can see this magnificent tower while passing the Auckland Bridge each while driving to work in the morning.

My new customers find it easy to locate our iPhone unlock and mobile phone repair laboratory when they are dropping off their phones for repair.  You can hardly miss this 120 meter tall building; it shines like a beacon during the day time, which makes it easy for customers to navigate to my business location.

"A new benchmark has been set for apartment living with the listing of a luxury $10 million penthouse on Auckland's North Shore. The penthouse, which takes out the top two floors of Takapuna's 30-floor, 120m high Sentinel apartment complex, was listed last week. It eclipses the previous record of $9.2 million set by a penthouse being constructed on top of Auckland's Stamford Plaza. Construction of the Takapuna complex is scheduled for completion in December next year, but already 99 of the 117 apartments - with an average price of $1.2 million - have been sold. The development will be Auckland's most expensive apartment complex to date and signals the growing interest in high-priced apartment living.

But while the Sentinel penthouse is New Zealand's most expensive, it pales in comparison against what is currently for sale in Australia - a $19.5 million penthouse on the Gold Coast in the 77-storey Soul Tower. Syreeta Jones of Browns Sothebys Realty said the Sentinel penthouse would be "very cool" once completed. She wasn't sure what sort of interest there would be, but hoped it would be bought by a New Zealander rather than a foreigner, who would use it only as a holiday home. "It is a very exclusive market. The target is the rich list and the top 10 per cent of New Zealand," she said.

The two-storey penthouse spans 795sq m with the top floor devoted to three double bedrooms, all with en suites and dressing rooms. The 29th floor is dedicated to the living, dining and entertainment area, while the balcony area includes a lap pool and hot tub and offers 360-degree views of the Haruraki Gulf and Auckland City."
