Sorry, no Apple iPhone 5 for Apple in 2011.

Iphone_5_image
So, Apple's Cupertino Let's Talk iPhone press conference has been and gone and there's no sign of the much rumoured iPhone 5. There's no teardrop design. No larger, edge-to-edge screen. And certainly no "two new handsets" as many analysts predicted.

Instead, we get an aesthetically identical iPhone 4S, although it must be said that while its external appearance may underwhelm, the innards are very much improved.

The camera is now 8-megapixel, with a f/2.4 aperture and a better CMOS sensor. There's 1080p video capture, face recognition and Siri voice control that has a touch of the science fiction.

It features the same A5 CPU that keeps the iPad 2 whipping along at a decent lick, and the graphics processor is promised to be seven times faster.

However, should this have been Tim Cook's first major announcement? He didn't even talk through each of the new products and software upgrades.

We know it's unfair to suggest, but the absence of Steve Jobs was never more apparent than at the non-iPhone 5 launch. And that may be the most lasting memory.

Ho well, there's always next June.

Apple iPhone 4S vs iPhone 4....

iPhone 4S vs iPhone 4

The iPhone 4S has arrived, and with it the panic from well over a millioniPhone 4 users who suddenly feel the sweat on their brow and sinking ache in the pits of their stomachs because they no longer own the number one Apple handset in town. There are, of course, only three ways of dealing with this and, since Pocket-lint isn’t, officially speaking, inclined to advise drinking lighter fluid until you forget, then your choices are either to get pre-ordering on 7 October or to discover that the iPhone 4S isn’t actually that much better the iPhone 4. So, which is it to be?

As ever, we’re happy to help out with your decision making by laying both handsets side by side in virtual comparison and picking through their respective details. Naturally, the results are best viewed next to the iPhone 4S review itself but, for the time being, here is the iPhone 4S vs iPhone 4.

Form Factor

TIE: IPHONE 4S
115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3mm, 140g

TIE: IPHONE 4
115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3mm, 137g

Well, waddya know? After all those imaginative mock-ups, the iPhone 4S has the very same case as the iPhone that’s been known and largely loved for the last 12 months plus. So, well, it’s a tie then. The form factor has been good up until now and it remains good, if a little unexciting, still. It’s still pretty thin at 9.3mm and certainly light enough at 137g or even when 3g heavier. We might have all rather got used to the way it appears, but the iPhone 4S will still be a good looking handset.

Display

TIE: IPHONE 4
3.5-inch, 960x640px, LCD with IPS

The one area where most iPhone users were probably crying out for an improvement was in screen size but the bad/good news, depending upon your point of view, is that that the iPhone 4S screen is identical to that of the last incarnation. It’s still got that outstanding pixel density but sadly not the real estate to back it up. So, for the time being, it’s a case of holding it closer to your retinas if you want to get a better look at whatever film it is you’re trying to watch. Better luck next year.

Engine Room

1ST: IPHONE 4S
Apple A5

2ND: IPHONE 4
Apple A4

As with the iPhone 3GS, that “S” stands for speed and so the iPhone 4S processor set up is the big selling point over the older model, and this is one category where you want to be paying close attention. As predicted, Captain Cook and his crew have taken the Apple A5 chip from the iPad 2 and stuffed it into the guts of the iPhone 4S.

The Apple A4 consists of a 1GHz ARM Cortex-A8 CPU with a single Hummingbird core and PowerVR SGX 535 graphics processor GPU. There’s also 512MB of RAM to back it up. The Apple A5 chip has a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor clocked at 1GHz. On the graphics front, it’s an upgrade to a dual-core PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU and there’s, again, 512MB of RAM in support. According to Apple, what this means in real terms is a chip that has a CPU twice as powerful as its predecessor and a GPU that can work seven times harder.

Imaging

1ST: IPHONE 4S

2ND: IPHONE 4
5MP rear, VGA front, 720p video

There weren’t going to be many places that Apple could make a realistic improvement on the iPhone 4 without making things very costly and more difficult to manufacture, but replacing the camera was one of them. The slightly dated 5-megapixel unit has been replaced by a far healthier sounding 8-megapixel sensor and the ability to shoot a more headline and impressive 1080p is a big bonus too.

Naturally, megapixels aren’t everything, so Apple has improved the optics on the iPhone 4S by opening up the maximum aperture from f/2.8 to f/2.4. That, plus a change in image sensor technology, is quoted as allowing 73 per cent more light gathered than on the iPhone 4 camera. There’s also the bonus of face detection, stabilisation and noise reduction to a degree. In short, we're talking sharper shots and at lower light levels too.

Connectivity

1ST: IPHONE 4S
HSPA+, GPS, BT 4.0, Wi-Fi, ant. switching, AirPlay Mirroring

2ND: IPHONE 4
3G, GPS, BT 2.1, Wi-Fi

There’s not a lot missing from the iPhone 4 connectivity arsenal but there are two noticeable gaps, one of which has been filled by the addition of a 4G radio inside the iPhone 4S. HSPA+ support isn’t much good if you live outside the US, and a handful of other countries, but it will offer up to 14.4Mbps download speeds in Utopian conditions.

With the iPhone 4 and its straight 3G, the best downlink you’ll be looking at is more like 7.2Mbps. As we say though, just because the iPhone 4S works with HSPA+, it doesn’t mean that you’ll be experiencing it where you are. What might be the real advantage is the improvements to the antenna such so it can switch between the radios more smoothly and, fingers crossed, not drop so many calls.

Finally, there's also the added bonus of AirPlay Mirroring with the iPhone 4S. While the iPhone 4 and AirPlay app will still allow you to stream videos and music from your phone to your HDTV and speakers via Apple TV, it doesn't allow you to show everything that's on your handset such as web pages, games, messages and all the rest. That's all possible with the iPhone 4S.

Battery Life

1ST: IPHONE 4S
up to 8 hours 3G talk time

2ND: IPHONE 4
up to 7 hours 3G talk time

Running the same screen and a more efficient chip at very similar output means that all it takes is a bigger power pack to get more life between charges on the iPhone 4S battery than on the iPhone 4, and that’s exactly what Apple has gone and done. While the older model can bring you up to 7 hours 3G talk time, 14 hours 2G talk time, 6 hours internet use over 3G, 10 hours of video playback or 40 hours audio; anyone purchasing the latest edition can look forward to 8 hours talk 3G talk time time, 14 hours 2G talk time, 6 hours internet use over 3G, 10 hours of video playback or 40 hours music.

So, when Apple says that it’s improved the battery, as far as the quoted specs go, what you appear to gain is a single hour of 3G talk time. And that’s it. Not a massive boost here.

Software

1ST: IPHONE 4S
iOS 5 + Siri

2ND: IPHONE 4
iOS 5

The launch of the iPhone 5 has also seen the arrival of iOS 5 which we all knew was coming since Jobs dropped the details at WWDC 2011. Both phones will be able to run this latest version of the mobile OS with the difference that one will have it installed out of the box, whilst the other you may or may not have to update yourself, depending on whether you already own your iPhone 4.

The major difference is the addition of Siri - a voice-controlled personal organiser of a sort which will translate your more human, sentence-based commands into actions. So, for example, it can set alarms, read and reply to your messages, find restaurants and the like. You can read more about Siri here for the finer details. The point is that it only comes with the iPhone 4S and not the iPhone 4 or below.

Storage

1ST: IPHONE 4S
16/32GB/64GB

2ND: IPHONE 4
8GB

Is it for the video, is it because there’s no removable storage or is it because storage is just cheap these days? We’ll never know, but the fact remains that the 64GB iPhone 4S offers double the space of the previous model and that’s a lot to play with. The nasty part is that the 16GB and 32GB version of the iPhone 4 line have been axed from this moment on, meaning that anyone who opts for the older model from new is limited to a rather small 8GB storage space only. Just count your luckies that there’s iCloud to give you a hand.

Price

1ST: IPHONE 4
$99

2ND: IPHONE 4S
$199/299/399

The bonus of going for the more budget option is that you get the more budget price to go with it, although that’s of little comfort to anyone who already owns the iPhone 4. Annoyingly for those in search of a bargain, the price differential reflects the halving of the storage space each time; the difference between the iPhone 4 and 16GB iPhone 4S is actually much greater than that. Worth bearing in mind.

Conclusion

1ST: IPHONE 4S

2ND: IPHONE 4

There’d be something seriously wrong if the iPhone 4S didn’t come out on top here, but is it so much better that you need to upgrade? Well, if games aren’t your thing and if the idea of Siri doesn’t drive you wild with excitement, then the answer is probably no. Sure, it’s got a better camera and takes video at a higher resolution and it even has a marginally longer battery life too, but none of this is any reason to try to buy your way out of a contract. It's also arguable as to whether 4G connectivity or AirPlay Mirroring - which only works with Apple TV anyway - is really going to add enough value for many people as well.

Much as with the iPhone 3GS, you can bet that it’s the 2012 iPhone launch that will see a bigger update to the hardware and the kind of thing that you will be wanting to sell your grandmother in order to get hold of.

If, however, you’re looking to buy for the first time, then don’t bother with the straight iPhone 4. Sure, you’ll find it a little cheaper, but the difference in cash isn’t really worth it and any saving you make will be outbalanced by that sense that you’ve got an inferior phone with an inferior camera too.

Mobile Phone Tech News and Report: Apple iPhone 4S vs Samsung Galaxy S II

The iPhone 4S might be Apple’s top dog but Android has some pretty impressive breeds of its own. Right now, the No.1 in the Google mobile space has got to be the Samsung Galaxy S II with the LTE and even LTE HD editions to enjoy if you happen to live in the right parts of the world.

We’ve already seen how the iPhone 4S matches up to the iPhone 4 but there’s going to be an awful lot of people out there tempted to make the step over to Android given that the 2011 Apple phone announcement has been an S upgrade rather than an iPhone 5 in its own right. So, if that’s you, or if you just want to know how your Samsung superphone compares to the latest that Cupertino has to offer, then here’s Pocket-lint with the iPhone 4S vs Samsung Galaxy S II so you can see for yourself.

Form Factor

1ST: GALAXY S2
125.3 x 66.1 x 8.49mm, 117g

2ND: IPHONE 4S
115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3mm, 140g

As far as pure design aesthetics and ergonomics go, this one’s a matter of horses for courses. Both the iPhone 4S and SGS2 are good looking devices with neither a knobble out of place. So, what the form factor contest comes down to is pocket space. What we always go on first are the mass and profile of the phones and it’s the Samsung Galaxy S II that’s both thinner and lighter. Yes, it’s longer and wider but these tend to be the dimensions of least importance when it comes down to taking up the room where your wallet and crumpled up tissues go. Ultimately, what you want is less weight to carry around and something that keeps the lining of your clothes as close to the way which your tailor intended.

Display

1ST: GALAXY S2
4.27-inch, 800x480px, 218ppi, Super AMOLED Plus

2ND: IPHONE 4S
3.5-inch, 960x640px, 326ppi, LCD with IPS

A contentious one but, for our money, the Samsung Galaxy S II has a superior screen to the iPhone 4S. Why? Well simply because it’s bigger. At this point, there will be the cries of a thousand Retina Display-o-philes, but we’ve listened, we’ve considered and you’re wrong. The resolution on the iPhone screen is superb and there’s no doubt, but put an SGS2 handset next to an Apple phone and the latter just looks a bit too junior. At this kind of small size, it’s about having the space to browse the web and watch movies properly rather than the clarity at which you can resolve them.

What’s more, Samsung does have some seriously impressive panel technology from all of its TV work and that Super AMOLED Plus and the colours that it can produce are superb. The iPhone’s screen is good. The Samsung’s is better.

Engine Room

1ST: IPHONE 4S
Apple A5

2ND: GALAXY S2
Samsung Exynos 4210

As it goes, both of these systems on a chip are made by Samsung anyway and it’s of little surprise, therefore, that each contains a dual-core, 1-1.2GHz ARM Cortex-A9 CPU running the show. Where it gets complicated is the graphics. On the one hand, the SGS2 features the Mali-400 GPU - an impressive piece of kit in its own right. However, the PowerVR SGX543MP2 working the magic in the Apple A5 seems to out-bench the Mali by quite some distance. Even though the Samsung packs double the RAM of the iPhone 4S at 1GB, it looks as if you’ll just get a smoother video and gaming experience with Apple’s handset, and that might be key.

Imaging

TIE: IPHONE 4S
8MP rear, 2MP front, 1080p video

TIE: GALAXY S2
8MP rear, 2MP front, 1080p video

Apple went to great pains to explain just how good the iPhone 4S camera is but the headline hard specs are identical to those on the Samsung Galaxy S II. Sure, there’s five glass elements, 74 per cent more light absorbed than the iPhone 4, temporal noise reduction and a maximum aperture of f/2.4 but Samsung simply hasn’t furnished the world with the same level of detail. Both have image stabilisation and face recognition and, ultimately, the only way we’ll ever know how they compare is once we get the new Apple phone in for a full iPhone 4S review. Until then, we'll leave this category tied with one interesting caveat from the Samsung Galaxy S II review and that’s that the autofocus does tend to hunt around a bit during video capture and that can ruin your clips at times. Worth considering.

Connectivity

1ST: GALAXY S2
Wi-Fi, NFC, 4G, BT 3.0, DLNA, free Wi-Fi tethering

2ND: IPHONE 4S
3G, GPS, BT 4.0, 4G, Wi-Fi

It’s pretty much of a muchness on the connectivity front but, the odd level of Bluetooth here and 4G standard there, it’s the Samsung Galaxy S Ii that brings slightly more to the table where it counts. Now, there are a few different versions here but the majority of the SGS2 phones have NFC built-in.

On top of that, there’s also the native DLNA functionality through Samsung’s All Share app that’s just more flexible than AirPlay on iOS. Granted, there’s nothing to match the AirPlay Mirroring on the iPhone 4S where you can witness exactly what’s going on on the phone’s screen on a larger TV but it, and the rest of the AirPlay fun, has to take place over Apple TV and that is seriously limiting.

Finally, you can tether your Galaxy S II to your laptop over Wi-Fi or USB to you heart's content, so long as your contract can manage the data. With the iPhone, that's very much under lock and key and something that most mobile providers get you to pay extra for.

Battery Life

TIE: IPHONE 4S
Up to 8 hours 3G talk time

TIE: GALAXY S2
1650mAh

Sadly it’s not possible to tell which smartphone has a better battery at this stage. Samsung hasn’t been kind enough to furnish the world with any of its “up to X amount when blowing your nose with it” figures and Apple hasn’t talked milliampere-hours, so we just don’t know. What we can tell you is that neither will quite last long enough. They’ll just about both limp across the line as you crawl into bed at the end of the day but, if we had to guess, we’d probably say that it’s the iPhone that offers that little extra. We’ll have to wait for the full review for the answer, though.

Software

1ST: IPHONE 4S
iOS 5 + Siri

2ND: GALAXY S2
Android 2.3 Gingerbread + TouchWiz 4.0

The question of mobile phone OS choice is an ever-changing, ever-difficult to measure category but today we’re handing it to what you get packaged with iOS 5 on the iPhone 4S.

Let’s get the simple stuff out of the way. iOS offers more apps and greater ease of use. Android tempts with more flexibility and greater customisation potential. We know this. What tips the scales this time though are a) the highly intriguing Siri personal organisation, voice recognition software that’s been hard wired in to the iPhone 4S and b) the fact that iOS 5 has basically robbed all the best bits of Android and integrated them in to its own UI. This is not intended as a slur. Android has done plenty of robbing itself and, at the end of the day, it’s all to the consumer’s benefit if such systems borrow from one another. Right now, though, iOS is just a little fresher but that could all change when Ice Cream Sandwicharrives on the scene.

Storage

TIE: GALAXY S II
16/32GB + microSD

TIE: IPHONE 4S
16/32/64GB

OK. So, it is just about possible to buy yourself a 64GB microSD card in this day and age and max your storage space out on the SGS2 to 96GB, you utter hoarder, you. But, bearing in mind that they cost over £100 and that working with a single fixed flash memory unit is much easier to manage than the dual internal/removable system on Android, we’re willing to cut the iPhone 4S a little slack here and call this one a tie. If enough SGS2 owners start actually forking out for massive microSD cards and tell us it’s the only way to fly, then we’re willing to listen. At the end of the day though, a smartphone is never going to have as much space as your computer, so you’re going to need to do some kind of management on your mobile. If you can’t do that with 64GB, then it’s you that’s the problem and not the phone.

Price

1ST: GALAXY S2
£410 (16GB)

2ND: IPHONE 4S
£499 (16GB)

Apple has stated that the UK price of the iPhone 4S starts at £499, making the equivalent storage size on the SGS2 nearly £90 cheaper, as quoted SIM-free and unlocked. That’s quite a saving and a clear winner for this category.

Conclusion

1ST: GALAXY S2

2ND: IPHONE 4S

Tricky, tricky, tricky. There are a lot of close run categories here and some small victories that perhaps don’t quite matter as much as others. The iPhone 4S A5 chip is a big plus point but that wonderful screen on the SGS2 is probably an even bigger one. It’s something that you’re aware of every single time you interact with the phone and effects the pleasure of anything that you choose to do with it.

The Samsung also has a slightly better form factor with some really useful features like DLNA and the promise of NFC if your locale happens to have any kind of infrastructure. So, with little to separate the two elsewhere and it having a lower price tag too, it has to be the Samsung Galaxy S II that takes the crown.

That’s the objective choice, but do bear in mind that the software on these phones may be quite a big factor for you when making your buying decision. If you’re frightened by the flexibility of Android and would prefer something that just works, then it might be that the iPhone 4S is the one for you. The success of Siri might also be something to keep an eye out for.

Vooma's Peel PG920 adds dual SIMs to the iPhone 4! (Apple iPhone, iOS News and Report)

Vooma gained attention last year for its Peel case, which bought phone capabilities to the iPod touch, and now it's launching a similar case to make your iPhone 4 and 4S dual-sim capable. Along with a 1380mAh battery, the clip-on case also holds a GSM SIM slot and unlocked cellular radio. To use to use it, you'll need a jailbroken phone loaded with an app available on the Cydia store, which interfaces with the radio to provide a second phone line. While the case is bulky, it's no worse than other battery packs, and the curves might even improve the ergonomics of the phone. Although dual-sim handsets haven't taken off in the US, they're popular in countries where having two providers can mean access to reception far more regularly.

TechCrunch has already got its hands on a pre-release version of the device, and says that once it's set up the PG920 "works seamlessly". The applications controlling it offering a similar look and feel to Apple's stock dialer and messaging apps, but aren't fully integrated into iOS — you'll need to keep both your stock apps and these custom ones. There's no word on price, availability, or which GSM bands the Peel works with yet, but you can sign up for more information on Vooma's website.

Latest Unofficial Apple iPhone 5 News: New Design of iPhone 5 With Back Aluminum Instead of Glass

After the successfull launch of iPad 2, Apple is now working on iPhone 5.A chinese Source claims that iPhone 5 would be having a redesigned Antenna with Aluminum backing instead to apply glass surface which is present in the current iPhone or there’s also some possibility to adopt iPod Touch 4G design.

Apple is working Aluminum backing and redesigned Antenna for next generation iPhone 5 because Apple faced alot of problems in iPhone 4 antenna signal loss and scratching on the back glass. And there was problems too for painting white glass for iPhone 4.

Decision to design iPhone 5 similar to iPod touch instead of using glass was arrived after receiving number of complaints. Apple seems to stop damages from scratching, issues after painting it white (for white iPhone 5), weight of glass and want to make it more durable instead.

Antenna will be designed just behind Apple Logo so that cellular and Wi-Fi signal can penetrate easily. Side exposed steel antennas seem to be abandoned, as designed in iPhone 4.

The Source site also claims that iPhone 5 will be galloping on the multi-processor A5 which is currently present in the iPad 2.

The release of the iPhone 5 is much expected in the month of June or July at WWDC 2011 which indicates as the Apple way as we look how previous iPhones got announced.
