If You Break The Rules On Google+, You Can Lose All Google Services

In order to comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, Google+ requires its users to be at least 13 years old. Last week, a 10-year old Gmail user in the Netherlands signed up for a Google+ account, and Al Jazeera reports that that's when trouble started.

The boy, Alex, was kicked off of all Google services for his terms of service violation. Furthermore, his father writes in a blog post that Google informed him that his account will be deleted in 29 days unless he can provide some proof of age (he can't).

This brings up a troubling but important point. Google rules so many markets and this makes it entirely possible to rely only on one company for managing your digital life -- email, word processing and document management, and now social networking. So play nice on Google+.

There are two sets of rules to follow. Its general terms of service applies to all things Google, and the community standards are specific to Google+. It includes things like:

no nudity or sexually explicit material

no hate speech

no impersonation of others

no publishing of someone's private or personal information

no copyright infringement

no spamming or phishing

These are all pretty common sense guidelines, but with the new precedent that you can lose all Google services for breaking them, it's a healthy reminder.

Power User Tips: How to Save Your Apple iPhone 4S’ Crappy Battery (iOS 5, drmobiles)

You might have noticed your new iPhone lasts about as long as Kim Kardashian's marriage—and what's the point of nifty new features if your phone's dead? Use these tweaks to squeeze the most life out of your battery.

The 4S battery situation is a little weird! It's got a slightly higher capacity than the iPhone 4 (5.3 WHrs versus 5.25), yet Apple gives it a worse battery life prediction. Why? For one, it's got a dual core processor, but there's also a ton of software action going on that's taxing your battery, hard. Location-aware features punch your battery every time they're used—and there are a lot of 'em. There could also just be some glitches afoot. At any rate, one or a mix of all these factors are making 4S users whine for good reason. So let's try and do something about it.

Location, Location, Location
The biggest battery murder culprit is Apple's new push on location awareness. Reminders, Find My Friends, and the underlying software that allows Foursquare to do creepy/neat things like remind you to stop at a nearby cafe. No matter how you're using it, your new iPhone is using its GPS and cellular powers to find itself in the world way more often than ever before. That's a kick in the nads for battery. Luckily, you can turn a lot of it off.

How to Save Your iPhone 4S' Crappy BatteryTo start, go into Location Settings, found in the main Settings list. You'll see a long rundown of every app on your phone that might take a little bite out of your battery. Some make a lot of sense (Maps) while some make zero sense at all (Angry Birds). Use your judgment. If you want the Chipotle app to more speedily direct you to a burrito, keep it enabled. Weather is a real killer—it'll hunt for your location every time you drop down the Notification Center to give you local forecasts. It's cool, but horrible on your charge.

How to Save Your iPhone 4S' Crappy BatteryNow let's dig deeper—at the very bottom of the list is a brand new button labeled System Services. Hit it. Here is the real battery succubus. Kill these things:

Turn off Diagnostics & Usage (Information about how and where you're using your phone, sent automatically to Apple).

Turn off Location-Based iAds (Ads are shitty enough, you don't need them to know where you are)

Setting Time Zone (Unless you're flying to a different country every other day, you probably don't need your phone to constantly see if you'ved moved nations and setting the time zone accordingly)

Traffic (Sure, the fewer people who use this, the less reliable crowdsourced traffic maps are. A necessary sacrifice.)

Slow Down Email
Push email is convenient, but the always onconnection is a juice sucker. If you don't mind having to wait, go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendar > Fetch New Data, turn off Push, and set Fetch to the longest interval you can tolerate (manual is best).

iCloud Tantrum
Some blame iCloud's background syncing for anemic lifespan. MacWorld's Christopher Breen says his 4S was stuck in a crash cycle while trying to constantly sync his backups. Try deactivating your iCloud powers and see if that boosts battery—if so, nuke the phone and set up iCloud again from scratch.

The Usual Suspects
Some battery tips will always work. Don't forget about the tried and true methods: turn down screen brightness, keep Bluetooth and Wi-Fi off, and switch off 3G data if you don't need your data connection. If all else fails, many users on Apple's official discussion boards are saying they've seen battery improvements after during a full system reset and starting from scratch. That might sound like a righteous pain in the ass, but worth a shot.

Condition Your Battery
Here's a lame analogy: batteries are like muscles. They need to be worked a bit before they're at peak condition. One 4S owner says he's seen big gains by draining his battery to the point of death, then letting it charge all the way back up to 100%.

So, uh, why is this happening?
Nobody is exactly sure. A lot of people are feeling similar drainage woes on their iPad 2 and iPhone 4 after upgrading to iOS 5. It could be the new software features.

Or hardware might be at the bottom of it all. The iPhone 4S' new A5 processor has two cores, which might be chugging more power than Apple expected. The A5 and the A4 in the iPhone 4 both use the same 45nm fabrication process (translation: how small are the tiny parts on the processor—lower is more power-efficient). But, interestingly, the A5 is allegedly capable of throttling its speed to conserve power when needed. If this function's gone haywire in the 4S, it's possible that a software update could whip the chip into shape.

There's also that damn screen. The Retina Display is gorgeous, yeah, but pumping up that many pixels in such a thin form puts the iPhone at a disadvantage compared to some of its slightly chubbier Android adversaries, which eke out better battery life despite similar location features. As Joan of Arc said, with great looks comes great responsibility.

Saeed Abdul Ghaffer Khouri demolished Talal Khoury’s previous record earlier this year when he bought a number plate bearing the single digit “1″ at an auction in Abu Dhabi. Mr Khouri, a member of a wealthy Abu Dhabi family, said: “I bought it because it’s the best number.” He wouldn’t say which of his vehicles he’d be putting the number plate on.

Talal Ali Mohammed Khoury broke the world record for the most expensive plate ever bougt when he paid over 25 million Dirhams (£3,500,000) for the single digit “5″ in 2007. While in the area, Mr Khoury also splashed out over £800,000 for the number “55″ at the same auction. When asked, he said the numbers held “absolutely no signigicance whatsoever” to him.

Bradford entrepreneur Afzal Khan smashed Mike McCoombs previous record earlier this year by buying “F1″ for a huge £440,000, making it the most expensive number plate to ever be sold in Britain. The plate is attached to Mr Khan’s Mercedes SLR McLaren, and he says “I think it’s a good price to pay because it’s probably worth 10 times that”.

After making his fortune in 2000 by selling his Mobile Phone Store to BT Cellnet, Mike McCoomb bought this record-breaking, £330,000 number plate in 2006, reportedly for his son’s sixth birthday. By our calculations that leaves the poor lad at least another three years before he can use them! We bet Dad’s enjoying them for now, though.

Top Ten (10) Craziest and Controversial Cults (all about strange news, culture, weird people)

Cults are always the subject of controversies and many, to not say most, of them are really crazy if you are to look at things from a logical point of view. Here we list 10 of the apparently craziest and controversial cults which successfully made it to major news front pages at one or more points in time!

Banner_water_damage_repair

1. The Order of the Solar Temple

Started by a Belgian leader Luc Jouret who was also a known neo-nazi, this cult was formed in 1984 under a Christian facade claiming it to be the second coming of christ. They sacrificed a child in 1994 labelling him anti christ and then a few days later committed suicide themselves. The cult has since been deemed criminal.

2. Bhagawan Shri Rajneesh’s Community

Formed in 1980′s this cult was known for raising of cult towns and the leader had hoards of Rolls Royce cars in his name. In Oregon, allegedly he poisoned people with Salmonella to alter the election results in his cult’s favor.

3. Branch Davidians

These people believed strongly in the theory of apocalypse, but after a FBI raid on their Texas church compound which left 76 people dead, the cult almost disappeared.

4. Raelians

Started in France in the 1970′s the Raelian cult has weird beliefs like UFO’s to be a part of most of the religions and possibility of something like a mind transfer. They also believe that cloning can lead to reincarnation.

5. Villa Baviera

Formed by Paul Schaeffer, a former Nazi party member in 1961, this was majorly formed by a group of German immigrants in Dignidad. They were charged and found guilty of torturing and molesting children.

6. Manson Family

One of the most brutal and violent cults, was formed by Charles Manson (guitarist) who was followed by a ‘family’ of criminals from his prison time. He preached that an apocalyptic war between blacks and whites was impending and sent his followers to murder people in order to show it to blacks as how it needs to be done. But in reality, he only planned murders of people who did not support him for his musical ambitions.

7. Heaven’s Gate

Leader Marshall Applewhite propagated a belief that earth would be recycled and only way to escape and survive is to hitch a ride on the comet Hale Bopp in March of 1997. Around 40 members along with Applewhite poisoned themselves wearing bands of ‘Heaven’s Gate Away Team’.

8. Aum Shinrikyo

This anti social cult formed in mid-1980′s and struck the Tokyo subway with the Sarin Gas killing few and injuring thousands. They believed they would develop some supernatural powers.

9. People’s Temples

Started by Reverend Jim Jones in an effort to help the jobless and homeless people, the cult was accused of abuse within the members. Later a mass suicide was also conducted involving more than 900 people who drank poison.

10. Scientology

Scientology is probably one of the greatest frauds being perpetrated right now. They claim that an intergalactic warlord ‘Xenu’ brought his people to earth 75 million years ago an blew them up with H-bombs. Yes, they know him by name!

Apple iPhone 4S and iOS 5 battery tips (iPhone repair and unlocking, drmobiles.co.nz

With iPhone 4S and iOS 5 out in the wild, there are many users expressing their concerns about the battery life, blaming it on both the OS and the device itself. I've been using iOS 5 since the first beta and iPhone 4S since the day it came out. So far, I have been quite impressed with the battery life. I posted some tips for the early iOS 5 beta testers previously and those still stand true, but I thought I'd share my recent findings with you all.

Now, you may find that some of the features listed below are crucial to you. That is fine, but the more you can afford from the list the better. By the way, you may notice that I don't mention screen brightness. I like mine to be set on full and it's not really iOS 5 or iPhone 4S related. But yes, screen brightness is usually one of the top tips for better battery life.

Here we go:

_find_us_here

Disable Weather and Stock widgets in Notifications.

Disable Location Services for Reminders. This one is a real killer and I recommend to not use the feature until the process is perfected.

Go to Settings - Location Services - System Services and set Setting Time Zone, Location-Based iAds, Diagnostics & Usage to OFF. Turning off Compass Calibration will also help.

Disable spotlight search for anything you don't actually use.

Check your locations services settings. Do all those apps need to have access to location services?

Ping used to cause battery drains, and since I never use it, I disabled it in Restrictions (settings - general - restrictions).

Go to Settings - About - Diagnostics & usage and select Don't send.

Use fetch rather than push for your email accounts.

Are you using Bluetooth? If not, turn it off.

If you are an iPhone 4S user, turning "Raise to speak" for Siri off will help you save some juice.

There have no evidence that the below does improve battery performance, and I have doubts that it does, but this appears to be quite a popular solution. I, personally, ignore this step, as I don't see how exactly it can improve battery life, but you may want to give it a go:

Delete your MobileMe mail account or iCloud account if you already migrated/signed up (settings - mail - etc...). Make sure you save data on the phone if you are deleting your iCloud account.

Do a hard reset.

Set up iCloud or MobileMe again.  OK, enjoy your iPhones!!!

Some Tips For Siri And iPhone 4S Dictation

If you are the proud owner of a new iPhone 4S, it probably won’t belong before you dictate an email, text message, or something else using Siri or the new Dictation feature.   However, unlike the natural speech that Siri herself loves, Dictation needs a little bit of extra TLC in your speech to get everything exactly the way you want it.  So, when you are dictating text, remember to use these tips for improving the accuracy of your dictation.

First, in general, speak clearly and distinctly.   Dictation accuracy will drop if you are less than clearly enunciating your words.

 FORMATTING:

Cap to capitalize a word: ‘I was shopping at cap Target”

Caps On for titles: “I was reading caps on The Washington Post”

All Caps to capitalize the next word: “Can we go now all caps PLEASE”

All Caps On and All Caps Off are Caps Lock: “This is all caps on NOT A JOKE all caps off so stop playing”

No CapsNo Caps On, and No Caps Off are the exact opposite of the above: “I like Amy and no caps amy”

Space Bar not only inserts a space, but can be used to prevent a hyphen in normally hyphenated words: ‘A long-lasting or long space bar lasting peace. ‘

No Space for words you want together: ‘Surf on the World no space Wide no space Web ‘

No Space On & No Space Off for words you want together: ‘I was running no space onreallyreallyfast no space off the entire time ‘

New Line starts the following text on a new line, and New Paragraph begins a new paragraph (effectively 1 and 2 carriage returns, respectively).

PUNCTUATION, SYMBOLS, OTHER TIPS:

Say punctuation: period  comma  apostrophe  open-parenthesis  close-parenthesis  asterisk  open quote  close quote.   Note that you do not need to say apostrophe for possessive names such as ‘Joe ‘s ‘.

There is a difference between a hyphen — like this — and a dash-like this.  Similarly, point (in numbers) and period have spacing differences.

Special symbols:  Note that many of these will automatically be placed in context, such as thedollar, centdegreepercent, and at signs:

  • % – percent sign
  • © – copyright sign
  • ® – registered sign
  • § – section sign
  • $ – dollar sign
  • ¢ – cent sign
  • ° – degree sign
  • ^ – caret
  • @ – at sign
  • £ – pound sterling sign
  • # – pound sign

Note: You must use cent sign explicitly.  Saying ‘The price is fifty three cents ‘ will yield ‘The price is $.53 ‘.   Say ‘The price is fifty three cent sign‘ to get ‘The price is 53¢’ “.

Email addresses should generally be prefaced with no caps on; most common domains (such as Gmail, Yahoo, etc) are recognized, but you may have to spell others.

Saying ‘www ‘ will result in the formatting of a URL: ‘www.isource.com/ ‘.  Oddly, unlike the desktop version, saying ‘http ‘ does not do the same thing in my testing.  I got ‘HDTV ‘ instead.

Hopefully this quick reference will help you make the most of Siri and Dictation.   Happy dictating!
