2011 Tech Update: RIM BlackBerry Curve 9350, 9360 and 9370

RIM has just announced three new BackBerry phones. The 9350, the 9360 and the 9370 are part of the BlackBerry Curve range and are aimed at those seeking a BlackBerry phone under a tight budget.

The three phones are mostly similar, with each having a 2.44-inch, 480 x 360 resolution display, 800MHz processor, 512MB of RAM, 5 megapixel fixed-focus camera with LED flash and VGA video recording, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi 802.11n, A-GPS and NFC. All three phones will be running on the latest BlackBerry OS 7 and will be powered by a 1000mAh battery. All this in a body that is just 11mm thick.

The only differences between the three is that the 9370 supports GSM as well as CDMA and will have 1GB of built-in memory whereas the 9360 and 9350 will have GSM/UMTS and CDMA connectivity respectively, along with 512MB of memory each.

The new smartphones are expected to be available from carriers in Canada this month and from other carriers around the world beginning in September. Pricing and availability dates will be revealed later by the carriers.

Mobile Phone News Update: Nokia launching C3-01 Gold Edition with 1GHz processor

Nokia just announced the new C3-01 Gold Edition, which is based on the original C3-01 Touch and Typebut with a twist. The twist in this case is the luxurious 18-carat gold plating, the speedier 1GHz processor, the ceramic-feel keyboard and a matching gold theme. The device is exclusively made to cater to Eastern Europe and the Middle East and has already started shipping in selected markets. It will cost around €220 before taxes and operator subsidies.

This could be a reincarnation of the C3-01.5 phone that was leaked last month with a 1GHz processor. We may even see a gold-less C3-01 with the updated processor hit other markets as well.

The Nokia C3-01 Gold

The Series 40-based device is a quad band GSM 850/900/1800/1900 and HSDPA 850/900/1900/2100 phone. There's a 2.4-inch QVGA resistive touchscreen, 1GHz processor, HSDPA up to 10.2 Mbps and HSUPA up to 2 Mbps, WLAN b/g/n standards, 5 MP fixed-focus snapper on the back with LED flash and a MicroSD card slot with support for up to 32GB of additional storage.

Other features include the Nokia Messaging, Nokia Communities (for Facebook and Twitter), the Nokia Series 40 browser and, of course, Ovi Store for downloading additional apps.

The C3-01 Gold Edition has retained its previous measures - 111 x 47.5 x 11mm and weighs the same 100g as the original C3-01.

There's no official word if the Nokia C3-01 Gold Edition will hit markets outside of Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Here's the product page Nokia has put up for the device.

Cheap Apple iPhone 4 (8GB) model on the way soon?

It seems a cheaper 8GB version of the iPhone 4 has entered its manufacturing stages. According to two unknown sources for Reuters, Asian suppliers are assembling the iPhone 4 with a lower memory capacity and the new 8GB flash drive is being manufactured by an undisclosed Korean company. It could be Samsung Electronics although there's no official confirmation on this. The new lower-capacity iPhone 4 will be ready for launch within weeks.

When the iPhone 4 was officially launched by Apple, an 8GB 3GS model was released for a cheaper price. It seems logical for this to happen again after Apple's new iPhone is announced.

Also according to Reuters sources Apple is aiming at a September launch for the iPhone 5 (or 4S), which will supposedly have a bigger display, a revamped antenna design and a better 8MP camera. Apple is rumored to have assigned production of their next iPhone to two manufacturers - Pegatron and Hon Hai, and the total number of planned devices should be around 45 million.

There's not long left now until September 7th, which is the go-to rumor date for the big iPhone announcement by Apple. Fingers crossed!
