Eight (8) Rumors About the Apple iPhone 5 That Seem Possible. . . .

Iphone 5g

Over that last few days, several more rumors have come in about the iPhone 5. We've posted them as they come in, but now it's time to gather the stuff we've been hearing and post it in one spot that's quick and easy for our readers to skim through. Some are updates, and some are rumors that have existed for some time now. Let's take a look at everything we've heard up until this point. Shall we?

1) Camera Flash is Moved Over

This one comes from two different sources. One is an image of a case supposedly designed for the Apple iPhone 5, it shows that the camera remains in the same spot while the flash has moved over to the opposite end of the phone.

Also lending a bit of validity to that rumor was an image of supposed camera components. They compare the iPhone 4 camera sensors to what are said to be iPhone 5 camera sensors.

2) 8MP Camera Sensor

This rumor came from Sir Howard Stringer, aka Big Boss over at Sony. He mentioned a few months back that they were suppling camera components for an Apple device that required an 8 megapixel camera. He never said what that device was, but it's most likely an iPhone 5. Typically, Facetime cameras and those built into the iPod touch and iPad aren't as high quality as the ones Apple puts in the iPhone. This narrows things down quite a bit and gives us more reason to believe that it will be a component in the iPhone 5.

3) Edge-to-Edge Screen

This one has a bit of weight to it. We it's not entirely clear at this point whether it's happening, but several rumors seem to point to yes. This may be in order to stay competitive with other smartphones, such as Android devices, some of which make the iPhone's screen look very tiny in comparison. Still, Apple would likely want to do this without making the iPhone larger.

4) iOS5This is most likely coming before the next iPhone. We will see it at WWDC '11, if reports are to be believed. We are willing to bet that it will happen. As for a release, perhaps later in June? That's not known yet. Apple can pretty much roll it out whenever they want to. It can be the hour they announce it for all we know. Either way, it would be in their best interests to release it before the iPhone 5 launches, otherwise they will be hit hard with millions of users registering and updating all at once.

The iPad 2 has a dual-core A5 processor. Apple likes their A-series because of the low power consumption. Much like the iPhone 4 and the original iPad carried an A4, it's likely that the next iPhone will carry a custom dual-core A5 chip.

5) Dual-Core A5 Processor

6) iPhone 4S Not iPhone 5?

Some rumors have suggested that the next iPhone may actually be named the iPhone 4S. This has been mentioned a few times, but none of the rumors seem to come from proven sources. One analyst says that this may be the case, because the iPhone will not be a 4G phone. This may be due to a shortage of Qualcomm chipsets.

7) No NFC

This one was mentioned by Bernstein Research. They say that the iPhone 5 (or iPhone 4S, but we will just go with 5 to keep it simple) will not have NFC technology. There have been many rumors saying it would, but probably just as many saying it wouldn't. Most of them began when people saw that Apple was hiring NFC experts. This was fueled by speculation that Apple wanted to remain competitive with Google's newer, NFC-enabled smartphones. The truth is, this rumor has been on and off for so long that it's funny, as in HAHA funny.

8) September Announcement

We can expect the device to be announced in September. This may be during Apple's usual fall music event at which they usually announce the new line of iPods (iPod touch, iPod nano, iPod shuffle). Some say that this may be when Apple announces their new iPhone. Could this be Steve's "And one more thing..."? Probably.

What do you think?

Sometimes it's a little fun to speculate. We all do it. We all enjoy digging and picking through the rumors to see what seems most likely and what seems like total bull. Right now, if we had to put our money on it, we'd probably go with the repositioned camera flash, the 8MP camera, the A5 chip and iOS5. Those are all safe bets as is the September announcement. The edge-to-edge screen seems plausible, at least much more so than a mini-iPhone.

What do you all think?

Apple Leak News 2011: iPhone 5 Rumors Suggest Repositioned Flash

ImageiPhone5cameraRumored

The images above are from website Apple.pro. It's very difficult to say whether or not these are legit. Still, the website reportedly has good sources. We will call it rumor for now.

According to the pictures, the lower set are the cameras that are going to be built into the iPhone 5. You can see that that the iPhone 4 rear-facing camera has the attached flash. This requires that Apple designs the iPhone in such a way that keeps the flash from interfering with the lens while taking photos.

This is in line with the supposed iPhone 5 case we saw a few days ago. The case, you may remember, showed that the iPhone 5 may have the camera and the flash located much further apart from each other than in past iPhone models. They also used a placeholder image that showed that the new iPhone may actually have the larger screen that many of the rumor sites and blogs have been talking about for some time now. It's unclear if that's going to happen, but the iPhone screen is starting to look small in comparison to other smartphones. On the other hand, the iPhone is still very small when compared to other phones, a feature that keeps it attractive when looking at phones that feel like small tablets.

_iphone_4_liquid_damaged

We also recently heard news about the anaylst report that the iPhone 5 may not be called that at all. It may be called the iPhone 4S and be considered a minor upgrade over the current model. If that is true, we probably won't be seeing an 4G-enabled iPhone this year. That could turn off many consumers.

2011 Gadget News Update: martphones Now Majority of Cellphone Purchases, iPhone Drives Growth

Smartphone-marketshare1

The iPhone is responsible for smartphone growth, but Android is still the most popular, says a Nielsen survey.

The results of the survey show that 38 percent of cellphone users in the US own a smartphone. They also note that 55 percent of the users who purchased a new phone in the past three months chose a smartphone instead of a feature phone. According to Nielsen, this is up from 34 percent a year ago.

38 percent of smartphone owners use Android devices, making it the most popular OS. However, the survey results also point out that the iPhone has seen the biggest growth these past few months. RIM's BlackBerry is still in the picture, but losing ground fast, while the rest (Palm OS, webOS, Symbian, Windows Phone 7) are far from being as large as the others.

Apple Leaked Tech News: iPhone 5 To Have a Dual LED Flash?

IPhone 4

Reports are circulating that the iPhone 5 will have a dual-LED flash. That comes from none other than Digitimes. Here's a segment from the report:

"The rumors come amid market reports indicating that Apple reduced its orders for Lumileds high-power LED flash products from Philips recently and switched the orders for LED flashes to Taiwan makers."

The iPhone 5 is rumored to be coming in September. Of course that means the rumors will only pick up. Expect everything from leaked photos to rumors confirming rumors then hearing the next day that it was all a load of poop. Gotta love the iPhone rumor cycle.

We've also heard that the flash will be repositioned. Supposed components have shown that. Whether the parts are real is unknown at this point.

iPhone Tech News Update: The Apple Rumor Cycle

IPhone 4

Each year it's the same thing. Apple is working on a new iPhone or iPad. Each year, the rumors start coming, and we hear everything. 3D iDevices, HD cameras, new versions of iOS, new processors and NFC tech.

It's all part of the Apple Rumor Cycle. It starts the day after Apple releases or announces their latest product. Everyone is already starting with rumors of the next one. Product development cycles overlap, and that's why the rumors get to be messy sometimes, but we've put together our favorite Apple rumor cycles for your reading enjoyment. Know that we are diving into self-parody here by poking a little fun at blogs running news. Still, we try to call B.S. when we smell it.

Either way, here is the Apple rumor cycle:

Apple releases the latest iPhone - People cheer and line up at the Apple Store to be one of the first with the newest iPhone. Apple sells millions.

PeopleiPHpne

New iPhone Rumors Emerge - The blogs start speculating on next year’s iPhone. This usually begins with common sense stuff like “Next iPhone will be called the iPhone 6, will have A6 processor and be even FASTER.” Duh. Still, it runs like wildfire and everyone feels obligated to run it.

Website with no Sources Comes Up With News - Somewhere down the line, a website with zero credibility (It’s often some obscure blog tailored for SEO) will run something like “Our sources say that the next iPhone will have six cameras and will be available sometime this year.” Other times, sites will just cite “an employee in the supply chain” which may just be some random factory worker saying whatever they feel like. The real news is traditionally gathered from within Apple and within other inside sources and confirmed through more than one source who has reason to be knowledgable about the situation.

Analyst Makes Prediction - Analysts start to weigh in. Sometimes they have sources at factories. Other times, they just guess. Usually, their guesses are things that have already been running in the blogs, “iPhone 6 will feature A6 chip, sharper display.” It’s also based on current mobile trends and technology. Android phones tend to cost less, so an Analyst takes a shot in the dark and says a smaller, cheaper iPhone makes sense for Apple business-wise. It’s run by every blog and tech website around as near-fact.

Reading Between the Lines from Source - Steve Jobs gets an email: “Steve, what about the iPhone 7?” and he responds with something like, “Not happening yet.” Suddenly, it’s all over the internet because he said “yet.” He didn’t say never, he said “yet.” This usually makes its rounds and take it as confirmation of an iPhone 7 because it came straight from Steve. Authenticity of email often remains unconfirmed.

  Foxconn

Parts Suppliers - A company in Korea or a supplier in China will say that they are working on new tablet displays or new components for smart phones to debut “next year.” For tech blogs like us, this usually somehow gets around the internet as “South Korean manufacturer supplying Ultra-HD 3D displays for next iPhone.”

Actual Info from sources -  This usually comes in the form of insiders. The bigger tech blogs will often have people on the inside hint at new features. These are the real nuggets of information. They provide a lot more information as to what is going on and when we can expect an update.

Apple Sends Out Press Invites - All the major website, except for Gizmodo, get invited to a special event on June XX or whatever. There is usually a subtle hint like “See what’s next” or “Changing the way we communicate” and it’s usually a not-so-subtle image, like a picture of a Home button or something similar. Enough to let you know that’s going on that day.

  Steveiphone

Apple Announces the Newest iPhone - The live blogs are rolling at full speed. Fans are hitting the refresh button, or following along a live feed. Steve Jobs introduces the next iPhone and announces a release date and features. He usually closes with “One more thing…” and it’s the big surprise part of the whole conference. Apple’s website is updated a short time after and people begin planning their campout at the Apple Store.

In the End

No matter the system, Apple always manages to throw in a surprise or two. Even then, the rumors keep coming in, and the last few days before the actual announcement, they tend to be about 70 percent correct. Usually in terms of specs and features. Apple will often throw in that extra little something to surprise us all.

Leaked Tech News 2011: iPhone 5 Ready for Production...along with the iPad 3?

IPad 2

Another iPad this year?

Website Digitimes reports that Taiwan-based component suppliers for the iPhone 5 and iPad 3 are already preparing materials for production of both iOS devices. Citing industry sources they report adds that the devices are likely to be introduced in September and become available in October:

"The sources pointed out that Apple only plans to launch one model of the new iPhone, while iPad 3 has just recently been added to the production schedule with both set to be produced in small volumes in August and the volume will start picking up in September and October."

While we can believe the reports on the iPhone 5, which we all know is coming this year anyway and has been widely-reported as a September announcement with a possible release later this month, it's hard to figure out where the iPad 3 information really comes from. Sure, it's going to happen, but will it really be this year? Especially with yesterday's Digitimes report saying that Apple is ramping up iPad 2 Shipment for the busy seasson. Apple's typically not one to keep the older model around, unless it's the iPhone we're talking about. Everything else gives way to the latest model in their product line.
